| Viet Nam - After the peace conference in Geneva, Vietnam was divided between the anti-Communist South and the Communist North. In 1956 South Vietnam with American backing, refused to hold country unification elections. By 1958 Communist-led guerrillas (Viet Cong) had begun to battle the South Vietnamese government. To support the South's government, the United States sent in military advisors which grew to16,300 by 1963. In 1965 President Johnson escalated the war, commencing air strikes on North Vietnam and committing ground forces which reached 536,000 by 1968. President Nixon advocated Vietnamization by withdrawing American troops and giving South Vietnam greater responsibility for fighting the war. Between 1968 and 1973 efforts were made to end the conflict through diplomacy. In January 1973 an agreement reached and US forces were withdrawn from Vietnam and US prisoners of war were released. In April 1975 South Vietnam surrendered to the North. |

A cover canceled on October 20, 1973 at Baltimore MD. It commemorates the decommissioning of the Coast Guard cutter, USCGC Pontchartrain which was stationed in Wilmington NC. It was sent (and autographed) by the Pontchartrain's Commanding Officer, Thomas C Volk. History: USCGC Pontchartrain (WHEC-70) was an Owasco Class high endurance cutter built for WW-II service with the US Coast Guard. She was commissioned days before the end of the WW-II and did not see combat action until Viet Nam. She patrolled Viet Nam waters as a part of US Coast Squadron Three from April 2 to October 25, 1970. The Coast Guard played a significant role in securing Vietnam's 1,200-mile coastline. Some 8,000 Coast Guardsmen and 56 different combatant vessels were assigned to duty there. Coast Guardsmen destroyed enemy supply ships, supported ground units, rescued American and other friendly forces and carried out humanitarian roles. When the Pontchartrain returned to the US she spent her the last 18 months in Wilmington, NC before she was decommissioned on October 19, 1973. |

unique in that it was sent "stampless" through the mails. History: Wilmington has been the home of the annual springtime "North Carolina Azalea Festival" which first began in 1948. The Festival is a celebration of Wilmington's exceptional azalea gardens showcasing the brilliant floral displays with which southeastern North Carolina greets the spring. Additionally, the Festival celebrates the rich history, artwork and culture of Wilmington. It is usually celebrated over five days of entertainment that now includes a parade, street fair, circus, concerts, pageantry and all that is Southern. The Festival is substantially sponsored by four major organizations including GE-Wilmington, Neuwirth Chrysler-Jeep, Progress Energy and the Wachovia Bank. The 72nd Annual "North Carolina Azalea Festival" will be held April 3-7, 2019 in the greater Wilmington area. |

A cover canceled on January 20, 1989 at Wilmington NC commemorating the decommissioning of the US Coast Guard Cutter, USCGC Northwind (WAGB-282). The cover is autographed by its Commanding Officer, Captain Kenneth J Morris. History: The USCGC Northwind was launched on February 25, 1945 and commissioned July 28, 1945. It was a "Wind" Class icebreaker modeled after the Swedish icebreaker, Ymer. Amongst other icebreaking operations, the Northwind participated in Antarctic Operation High Jump (1946/47), Bering Sea scientific expeditions (1955), Distant Early Warning (DEW) Line operations (1955), Antarctic Operation Deep Freeze (1956/57), oceanographic experiments in the East Siberian Sea and Arctic Ocean (1962) and conducted oceanographic experiments in the Chukchi, East Siberian and Laptev seas (1963). It continued to serve on various arctic operations with duties including laying cables, oceanographic studies and re-supplying the DEW Line (into the mid-1980s). The Northwind was stationed in Seattle WA (1973), Baltimore MD (1973-1978) and from 1978 to 1989, stationed at Wilmington NC where it was deployed for icebreaking including operations in the Great Lakes. The last mission of the Northwind (Project CEAREX) in late 1988 was to penetrate the Arctic pack ice for the Norwegian research vessel, "RV POLARBJORN." It was the final cruise of the Northwind before returning to its home port of Wilmington NC. The USCGC Northwind (WAGB-282) was decommissioned in Wilmington NC on January 20, 1989 having the distinction of being the last remaining Wind-class icebreaker and having 44 years of service in the waters of both the North and South poles. |

The motto of the State of North Carolina is "Esse Quam Videri" which is translated "To be, rather than seem." |

Azalea Festival" in Wilmington. This cover has a cachet of the new downtown main post office. The cornerstone of this post office was laid on September 27, 1936 and was dedicated on May 29, 1937. Its lobby contains a mural painted in 1940 by William F Pfohl depicting the historic Wilmington waterfront. History: Wilmington has been the home of the annual springtime "North Carolina Azalea Festival" which first began in 1948. The Festival is a celebration of Wilmington's exceptional azalea gardens showcasing the brilliant floral displays with which southeastern North Carolina greets the spring. Additionally, the Festival celebrates the rich history, artwork and culture of Wilmington. 3403 | A cover canceled on June 30, 2000 at Wrightsville Beach (Wilmington NC) commemorating the decommissioning of the US Coast Guard Cutter, USCGC Point Warde (WPB-82368). History: The USCGC Point Warde was built by JM Martinac Shipbuilding in Tacoma WA and commissioned on August 14, 1967. This Point Class Cutter was an 82 foot patrol vessel first stationed at San Juan Puerto Rico from 1967 to July 1987. She was used for law enforcement and search and rescue operations establishing a noteable record of accomplishments. Of note, on September 30, 1984 she seized the F/V Three Brothers thirty miles southwest of Puerto Rico with 14 tons of marijuana on board. The Point Warde was transferred to the Coast Guard Station Wrightsville Beach NC in July 1987. She was a fast and highly maneuverable cutter capable of operating in heavy seas and used primarily for search and rescue, maritime law enforcement and interdiction of illegal drugs. Other duties included Wilmington port security and marine environmental protection. The Point Warde was decommissioned at Wrightsville Beach NC on June 30, 2000. She was then transferred to Columbia South America. |

| The War in Afghanistan began on October 7, 2001 with the launching of Operation Enduring Freedom in response to the 9-11 attacks on the US. This complex counterinsurgency effort was led by US forces against Al-Qaeda and its Taliban supporters. The Iraq War (2nd Gulf War - Operation Iraqi Freedom) began on March 20, 2003 with the invasion of Iraq by an international force led by troops from the US under the administration of President George W Bush. The invasion of Iraq led to the capture of Iraqi president, Sadam Hussein. Hussein was later tried in an Iraqi court, found guilty and executed. In 2008 the US and Iraqi governments approved a Status of Forces Agreement effective through January 1, 2012. |

A cover sent from Masonboro Island, Wilmington NC. It was the 1st mail ever to be posted from the island. The covers used special "Beach Post" labels in addition to US Postage stamps. They were transmitted from Masonboro Island back to Wilmington by boat where the covers were posted on April 19, 2007 at the Myrtle Grove Post Office, Wilmington NC for further delivery through the US mails. History: Masonboro Island is the largest undisturbed barrier island along the southern part of the North Carolina coast. It is located approximately five miles southeast of Wilmington. Masonboro Island is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean to the east, the Atlantic Intra-coastal Waterway to the west, Masonboro Inlet to the north and Carolina Beach Inlet to the south. It is located in the most populous part of the North Carolina coastal area. Masonboro Island is 8.4 mile long island encompassing approximately 5,046 acres, 87 percent of which are covered with marsh and tidal flats. The remaining 619 acres are composed of beach uplands and dredged-material islands. Masonboro Island is an essentially pristine barrier island and estuary system (where tidal ocean salt waters meet river fresh waters). It can only be reached by boat. It is uninhabited by people and is not supported with any utilities or postal facilities but is the frequent destination of boating-campers, beach-goers and tourists. The habitats found on Masonboro Island include sub-tidal soft bottoms, tidal flats, hard surfaces, salt marshes, shrub thicket, maritime forest, dredge spoil areas, grasslands, ocean beach and sand dunes. The Secretary of the Navy, Richard Danzig named the US’s newest submarine (fourth unit of the Virginia Class) for the State of North Carolina. The nuclear attack submarine, North Carolina (SSN-777) is the Navy's next-generation attack submarine with the capabilities to maintain the US’s undersea supremacy well into the 21st century. The primary responsibility for its construction was assigned to Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock, Newport News VA with Electric Boat, Groton CT building selected modules. History: This is the fourth ship of the US Navy to carry the name North Carolina. The original was USS North Carolina (1820-1836), the second ACR-12 (1908-1921) and the third BB-55 (1940-1947). The BB-55 battleship now serves in Wilmington NC as a memorial for all North Carolinians killed in WW-II (see 1941 above). A cover sent from Wilmington NC on April 19, 2008. It commemorated the Coastal Carolina Air Show held at Wilmington International Airport. Amongst the many aerial performers at the Air Show, the main attraction was the US Air Force Thunderbirds. History: In the early 1950's the US Air Force saw the need to create a precision aerial maneuver flight team who could demonstrate to the public the capabilities of its high-performance aircraft. On January 1, 1953 the Thunderbirds were activated as the 3600th Air Demonstration Team at Luke Air Force Base near Phoenix AZ. Initially they flew the F-84 Thunderjet performing before audiences across the US and later in many foreign countries. A "First Day of Issue" cover sent from Masonboro Island, Wilmington NC on May 1, 2008. The cover has a special "Beach Post" label (Issue #2) in addition to a US Postage Photo stamp which was cancelled at Wilmington's Myrtle Grove Postal Station. It is a pristine barrier island and estuary system where tidal ocean salt waters meet river fresh waters. The habitats found on Masonboro Island include sub-tidal soft bottoms, tidal flats, hard surfaces, salt marshes, shrub thicket, maritime forest, dredge spoil areas, grasslands, ocean beach and sand dunes. Accordingly at different times of the year, many types of birds can be seen living or visiting Masonboro including Snow Geese, Tricolored Herons, Great Egrets and Laughing Gulls. Issue #2 "Beach Post" labels feature photos of these birds. These photos are the work of Dorothy Pugh. A cover sent on May 3, 2008 from Wilmington, North Carolina commemorating the commissioning of the nuclear attack submarine, the USS North Carolina (SSN-777). It has a unique US Photo Stamp (SSN-77 during sea trials) and a limited-use US Postal special cancellation containing the ship's motto, Primus in Proelio (First in Fight). These commissioning covers were issued with three different cachets. A commissioning cover prepared by the US Navy which was given to each of the 5,000 plus attendees to the Wilmington, North Carolina commissioning ceremony on May 3, 2008. History: The commissioning ceremony marks a ship's entry into active service in the US Navy. At the moment the commissioning pennant breaks the masthead, the USS North Carolina became a Navy command in her own right taking its place alongside the active ships in the US Naval fleet. Many dignitaries attended the commissioning ceremony in Wilmington NC. Amongst many congradulatory letters, President George Bush sent his congradulations. Additionally, Captain Mark Davis, Commanding Officer of the USS North Carolina (SSN-777) expressed his thanks to the shipbuilders, Northrop Grumman Newport News and General Dynamics Electric Boat, to his crew of talented sailors and to the people of the US, of North Carolina, of Wilmington, the warm and hospitable city chosen for this commissioning ceremony. A commissioning program marked this special occassion. |

2347 & 1562 | A cover sent on June 14, 2008 from Wilmington, North Carolina commemorating the 75th Anniversary of President Roosevelt's New Deal with the Federal funding of the Penderlea Homestead Resettlement Community 40 miles north of Wilmington, NC. History: The Great Depression in the US is associated with the stock market crash on Black Tuesday, October 29, 1929. The Depression lasted until the onset of the war economy of WW-II in 1939. The Depression had devastating effects in the industrialized countries of the world as international trade declined sharply as well as personal incomes, tax revenues, prices and profits. Cities all around the world were hit hard especially those dependent on heavy industry. Construction was virtually halted and farming and rural areas suffered as crop prices fell. By spring of 1933, when Franklin D Roosevelt took the oath of office, US unemployment had risen from 8 to15 million and the US gross national product had decreased from $103.8 to $55.7 billion. Both industry and farming were severely hit by these economic downturns. FDR promoted a wide variety of federally funded programs (the "New Deal") aimed at restoring the American economy, helping relieve the suffering of the unemployed and reforming the system so that such a severe crisis could never happen again. Forty miles north of Wilmington, NC the Penderlea Homestead Resettlement Community was one of the first such communities to receive Federal funds as an experimental community of farms, businesses, churches and civic organizations. |

2347 & 1562 | A cover sent on June 21, 2008 from Wilmington, North Carolina commemorating the 3rd Annual Blueberry Festival held in Burgaw, 20 miles north of Wilmington, NC. History: Antioxidants protect the body against the damaging effects of free radicals and the chronic diseases associated with the aging process. Blueberries contain many of these naturally occurring antioxidants such as Vitamins C and E. In addition, blueberries contain anthocyanins and phenolics that also act as antioxidants. Anthocyanin gives blueberries their blue color and is the key component of the blueberry's antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Blueberries test high in their ability to subdue free radicals. Free radicals damage cell membranes and DNA through a process known as oxidative stress and are blamed for many of the dysfunctions and diseases associated with aging. The first cultivated blueberry production in North Carolina began in the Pender County area in the 1930s. Currently, Pender County ranks second in NC's blueberry production. Twenty miles north of Wilmington, NC in Burgaw the annual North Carolina Blueberry Festival is held every year celebrating the area's bountiful harvest of blueberries. This festival has expanded celebrating the historical, economic and cultural significance of blueberries grown in southeastern North Carolina. |

2347x2 | A cover cancelled on July 10, 2008 in Wilmington NC commemorating the 25th Anniversary of filmmaking in Wilmington NC. History: Producer, Frank Capra Jr discovered North Carolina in 1983 while searching for a home to burn down for the filming of "Fire-Starter," the Stephen King horror movie starring a young Drew Barrymore. The scene was shot at the Orton Plantation in Winnabow. Capra then persuaded his boss, executive producer Dino De Laurentiis to build a movie studio facility in Wilmington NC. Capra said, "If you can do it there, we can do it here." In 1983 De Laurentiis founded De Laurentiis Entertainment Group (DEG) and DEG Film Studios in Wilmington where he served as chairman and CEO. DEG became the largest full service motion picture facility in the United States east of California. Wilmington NC became "Hollywood East" or "Wilmywood." In 1988 De Laurentiis resigned from DEG and Screen Gems Studios took over the Wilmington movie/television studio facility. In 1997 the Cooney family bought the Wilmington studios and installed Frank Capra Jr as president of EUE Screen Gems Studios. This Wilmington motion picture/television studio has been the home to hundreds of film, television and commercial productions. It is complimented by a seasoned crew base, an active regional film commission and a large talent pool. The 48 acre studio lot has nine sound-stages, first-rate support services with on-the-lot grip and lighting facilities. |

2347 & 1562 | A cover cancelled on July 11, 2008 in Wilmington NC celebrating the proclamation that Wilmington is "America's WW-II City." The July 4th Star-Spangled week centered around the re-dedication of the renovated and restored United Service Organizations (USO) Center building on the corner of Second & Orange Streets in Wilmington NC. The Wilmington USO Center was a "Home Away From Home" on the home front serving more than one million servicemen and women through the duration of WW-II. History: There was a build-up of the US military as the threatening WW-II situation intensified. President Franklin D Roosevelt wanted to provide morale and recreation services for US uniformed military personnel. Six civilian agencies including the Salvation Army, YMCA, YWCA, NCCS (National Catholic Community Service), NTAA (National Travelers Aid Association) and the NJWB (National Jewish Welfare Board ) pooled their resources and the United Service Organizations (USO) was incorporated in New York on February 4, 1941. USO centers and clubs quickly opened around the world as a "Home Away from Home" for GIs. The local USO was a place to go for dances and social events, for movies and music, for a quiet place to talk or write a letter home, or for a free cup of coffee and an egg. To support the servicemen and women stationed or training in Southeastern North Carolina, a USO Center was opened in Wilmington a few days before the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 . The Wilmington USO Center (then & now) is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of a handful USO structures still standing in the US. It is an arts resource and a hub of the region's legacy supporting Wilmington's designation as "America's WW-II City." It has been restored to its wartime appearance and is a home-front museum. History: The United States Congress (Act of Congress) has recognized selected cities in the US as a "Coast Guard City." This designation is granted for five year periods subject to Congressional renewal. For a city to be recognized as a "Coast Guard City" it must have made special efforts to acknowledge the professional work of the Coast Guard men and women assigned to their area by regularly reaching out to them and their families and making them feel "at-home at their home-away-from-home." Such city efforts should be indicative of a longstanding and enduring relationship, a partnership between the city and members of the Coast Guard family and their dependents. It is important to note that there has been a Coast Guard Cutter stationed in Wilmington almost continually since 1792. The current Cutter in Wilmington is called "Diligence." It is the sixth Coast Guard cutter to have the name "Diligence" and has been assigned to Wilmington since 1992. There have been six cutters named "Diligence" and five of these have been home-ported in Wilmington. Diligence #1 through #4 were based in Wilmington from 1792 to 1830's while Diligence #5 saw duty from 1919 to 1961 in New York NY, Boston MA, Cleveland OH and Long Beach CA. Since Diligence #1 (one of the first original ten Coast Guard "Revenue Cutters") was based in Wilmington NC, it is fitting that the current Diligence #6 is also based here. The US Coast Guard bestowed the title of "Coast Guard City" to Wilmington NC during a recertification ceremony on July 26, 2008. Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo said, "Wilmington truly values its relationship with the Coast Guard and will continue to strive to live up to the honor of being a Coast Guard City." Representative Mike McIntyre (NC's 7th Congressional District) said, "Because of their readiness, the Coast Guard has given us a history to be proud of, a heritage to treasure and a hope for tomorrow." As part of the recertification ceremony Coast Guard Seaman Houston Edwards and Petty Officer 3rd Class Joseph Harris (Coast Guard Station Oak Island NC) accepted a wreath from Representative Mike McIntire and Mayor Bill Saffo. The wreath was dedicated to honor US servicemen and women, both past and present and was placed in the Cape Fear River. A series of five covers canceled on September 8, 2008 in Wilmington NC commemorating Wilmington NC as the first US market to switch from analog to digital TV broadcasting. History: In 1996 Congress authorized the distribution of an additional broadcast channel to each US broadcast TV station so that they could start a digital broadcast channel while simultaneously continuing their analog broadcast channel. Congress mandated that February 17, 2009 would be the last day for full-power television stations to broadcast in analog. After that date all full-power television stations would broadcast in digital only. A benefit of the switch to all-digital broadcasting would free up parts of the broadcast spectrum to be used for improved public safety communications (police, fire department and rescue squads). The public would also benefit because digital broadcasting would allow stations to offer improved picture and sound quality as digital is much more efficient than analog. The Federal Communications Commission searched for a representative community to initiate a trial program to work out any possible problems before the February 17, 2009 national switch from analog to digital. The FCC chose Wilmington, North Carolina as the first city in the US to switch from analog to digital, 162 days (5+ months) in advance of the national switchover. Americans and the world will "Never Forget." History: On September 11, 2001 there were a series of coordinated suicide attacks (aka 9/11) by al-Qaeda upon the United States. Nineteen Islamic terrorists (al-Qaeda) hijacked four US commercial passenger jet airliners. The hijackers intentionally crashed two of the airliners into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, crashed a third airliner into the Pentagon and a fourth crashed into a field in Shanksville PA before reaching targets in Washington DC. There were no survivors on any of the flights. 2,974 people died in these attacks and 24 were missing and presumed dead. The majority of casualties were civilians including nationals of over 90 different countries. On that fateful day President George Bush spoke to America. "Good evening. Today, our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedom came under attack in a series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts. The victims were in airplanes or in their offices: secretaries, businessmen and women, military and federal workers, moms and dads, friends and neighbors. Thousands of lives were suddenly ended by evil, despicable acts of terror. The pictures of airplanes flying into buildings, fires burning, huge structures collapsing have filled us with disbelief, terrible sadness and a quiet, unyielding anger. These acts of mass murder were intended to frighten our nation into chaos and retreat. But they have failed. Our country is strong. A great people has been moved to defend a great nation. Terrorist attacks can shake the foundations of our biggest buildings, but they cannot touch the foundation of America. These acts shatter steel, but they cannot dent the steel of American resolve. America was targeted for attack because we're the brightest beacon for freedom and opportunity in the world. And no one will keep that light from shining. Today, our nation saw evil, the very worst of human nature, and we responded with the best of America, with the daring of our rescue workers, with the caring for strangers and neighbors who came to give blood and help in any way they could. Immediately following the first attack, I implemented our government's emergency response plans. Our military is powerful, and it's prepared. Our emergency teams are working in New York City and Washington, D.C., to help with local rescue efforts. Our first priority is to get help to those who have been injured and to take every precaution to protect our citizens at home and around the world from further attacks. The functions of our government continue without interruption. Federal agencies in Washington which had to be evacuated today are reopening for essential personnel tonight and will be open for business tomorrow. Our financial institutions remain strong, and the American economy will be open for business as well. The search is underway for those who are behind these evil acts. I've directed the full resources for our intelligence and law enforcement communities to find those responsible and bring them to justice. We will make no distinction between the terrorists who committed these acts and those who harbor them. I appreciate so very much the members of Congress who have joined me in strongly condemning these attacks. And on behalf of the American people, I thank the many world leaders who have called to offer their condolences and assistance. America and our friends and allies join with all those who want peace and security in the world and we stand together to win the war against terrorism. There was a ceremony at Wilmington's Cape Fear Community College, a global unity interfaith service held at the Unity Christ Church of Wilmington NC, a memorial at Brunswick Community College, a flag display at UNCW's Randall Library and a motorcade by the Red Knights International Firefighters. Patriotism in America is seen in Lee Greenwood's song," I'm Proud To Be An American (aka God Bless the USA)." And I had to start again, with just my children and my wife. I'd thank my lucky stars, to be livin here today. ‘ Cause the flag still stands for freedom, and they can't take that away. And I'm proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free. A cover cancelled on October 4, 2008 in Wilmington NC commemorating the 30th annual Riverfest in Wilmington. History: The Cape Fear River was originally called the Jordan River. It is formed at Haywood NC by the confluence of the Deep and Haw Rivers just below Jordan Lake in central North Carolina. After a series of rapids, the river becomes navigable at Fayetteville through a series of locks and dams. It flows about 195 miles entering the Atlantic Ocean three miles west of Cape Fear. As it nears the ocean, it becomes a slow coastal river. Below Wilmington NC, the Cape Fear River is a coastal estuary separating the mainland of North Carolina from its barrier islands where it becomes a segment of the Intracoastal Waterway route. During the colonial era, the river provided a principal transportation route to the interior of North Carolina. The colonial township of Wilmington was incorporated on the Cape Fear River in 1739. Wilmington and its river became intra-dependent. One of the ways the citizens of Wilmington show their appreciation of their river is through Riverfest. The festival of Riverfest was first celebrated in Wilmington NC in 1979. At that time there were four concessions, trolley rides and fireworks. Riverfest was a roaring success that would be repeated annually. On the first weekend of October (10/3-5/2008) Wilmington celebrates the 30th annual Riverfest. To accomplish this celebration, twenty plus committees, over 300 volunteers and a budget of $80,000 are being allocated in conjunction with over 160 craft vendors, 25 concessions, entertainment on two stages, fireworks, the Great Waiter's Wine Race, Run the River, exhibits and a Kids Zone. Riverfest is free-family entertainment over a fun-packed weekend on a fun-filled half mile on the waterfront of the Cape Fear River in downtown Wilmington. Note: The Post Office was closed on Sunday, October 12th. History: The construction of Thalian Hall was completed in 1858 when Wilmington was the largest city in the state of NC. It is the only surviving theater designed by John Montague Trimble, one of America's foremost 19th-century theater architects. When it opened its doors it housed the town government, the library and an "Opera House" which seated 1,000 people (10% of the population of Wilmington). During the Civil War, Thalian Hall was in almost constant use as a place of amusement. The theater was operated by the early Thalian Association for the first two years of its operation. From 1860 through 1932 Thalian Hall was leased by private entrepreneurs, who booked road shows and star attractions. Between engagements the theater hosted amateur concerts, recitals, meetings, graduations, exhibitions, and even roller-skating. After the turn of the century, Thalian Hall went through several renovations. It had several close calls with demolition in the 1930's and 40's but the citizens of the community always rallied for its preservation. Following a small fire in 1973, the theater was restored to its turn of the century appearance. After reopening in 1975, Thalian Hall witnessed a dramatic increase in use by professional artists and community groups and audience attendance rose. |

These warriors who have been injured in combat have a long and hard rode to rebuild and reconnect their lives. The rehabilitative cycling program is a way for these combat-wounded vets to focus on the positive and create a support network. There will be over 40 rides including a carousel, music express and ferris wheel. It features educational and individual exhibits inside the Agriculture Exhibit Tent including field crops, horticultural crops, culinary, clothing, needlework, arts and crafts, youth and vocational entries (all items made during the current year). The Cape Fear Fair & Expo is a public service that promotes the development of the agricultural, educational and cultural resources of New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties. Robert Joseph "Bob" Dole was born on July 22, 1923 and is a retired US Senator from Kansas (1969–1996). During this service he served as US Senate Majority Leader where he set a record as the longest-serving Republican leader. He was the Republican nominee in the 1996 US Presidential election and the Republican Vice Presidential nominee in the 1976 US Presidential election. After his political service, he became special counsel at the Washington DC law firm of Alston & Bird. Mary Elizabeth Hanford "Libby" Dole was born July 29, 1936 and served in both the Ronald Reagan and George HW Bush Presidential administrations. She currently serves as a US Senator from North Carolina. She was elected to the Senate in 2002 and is the first female Senator from North Carolina. History: The 14th annual Cucalorus Film Festival was held November 12th-15th, 2008 in Wilmington, North Carolina. Cucalorus is a celebration of independent filmaking where over 145 documentaries, features and shorts will be screened. It draws visitors from around the world for a creative exploration of the filmaking artform. Cucalorus began in Wilmington in 1994 with the screening of 16 films at a waterfront restaurant where filmmakers came together simply for the love of making movies. The historic port city of Wilmington is one of the leading film production locations in the country and home to EUE Screen Gems Studios. Cucalorus (aka cookie) is the name for a piece of filmmaking equipment. It is a device for casting shadows or silhouettes to produce patterned illumination. A cookie is used to create a more natural look by breaking up the light from a man made source. It can be used to simulate movement by passing shadows or light coming through a leafy canopy. The Cucalorus Film Festival is held at several venues around Wilmington including the historic Thalian Hall, the Jengo's Playhouse theater, the Lumina Theater (UNVW Fisher Student Center) and the Cameron Art Museum. The Cucalorus Film Foundation creates opportunities for filmmakers to share their stories and visions and maintains an active presence throughout the year with weekly screenings at its foundation headquarters in the Jengo's Playhouse. Wilmington welcomes over 90 artists from around the world who will converge in Wilmington for four days, sharing their work, trading ideas and creating community. |

November 14, 2008 from Wilmington, North Carolina commemorating the 80th Anniversary of the Wilmington International Airport. History: The airfield was named in the memory of Arthur Bluethemthal who was born on November 1, 1891 in Wilmington and killed in France on June 5, 1918 while serving with the Lafayette Flying Corps during WW-I. Bluethenthal Airfield was carved out of dairy farmland adjacent to the Wightsboro-Winter Park Road (now Kerr Avenue). New Hanover County employed the services of Lt HW Holden, commanding officer of Pope Field in Fort Bragg NC to lay out two grass runways, one 1,700 feet and the other 1,750 feet long. Initially the airport had no lighting, no hangers, no spare parts or service crews and repair facilities. Coastal Plains Airways provided the first passenger service at Bluethenthal Airfield. Warren Kinchen Pennington was its manager/pilot. Coastal Plains later became Port City Flying Service, then Sea Level Airways and eventually evolved into Pennington Flying Service. In 1942 Bluethenthal Airfield was taken over by the US Army Air Corps and became the Wilmington Army Airport. The Pennington's moved their commercial air operations to Carolina Beach Airport which was located about a mile north of Snow's Cut (a bit north of Carolina Beach). The Army Air Corps enlarged the airport paving all runways (extended to 7,000 and 7,999 feet long) and added and improved all its facilities. After WW-II ended, the military returned the airport in 1946 to the County and it became the New Hanover County Airport. The County appointed an Airport Board to manage the airport leading to conflicts between County ownership of the land and buildings and the Borad's management responsibilities. Southeast Airlines was the first airline after WW-II to serve Wilmington followed by National Airlines. In 1966 the military returned to the airport when the 444th Fighter Interceptor Squadron of the Air Defense Command located F-101 aircraft and support facilities on the east side of the field. History: Adjacent to Wilmington NC along the southeastern barrier island coast of North Carolina is a breathtaking stretch of paradise composed of beaches, marinas and the Intra-coastal waterway. One of these beaches is Wrightsville Beach. The island of Wrightsville Beach is 1,000-5,000 feet in width and stretches almost four miles from Masonboro inlet on the south to Mason inlet on the north. It offers its pleasures to any who seek fishing, boating, surfing or simply a peaceful place to lounge at the water's edge. On March 6, 1899 the Wrightsville residents incorporated the Town of Wrightsville Beach. Since 1983 a dedicated band of Wrightsville volunteers have woven together a family-friendly weekend highlighted with a "Holiday Flotilla" of creatively lighted boats parading from Motts to Banks Channels on the Intra-coastal waterway. The Flotilla is complemented with a visit from Santa and Mrs Claus, a visit from Miss and Mrs North Carolina, a Christmas tree lighting ceremony, games for children, a crafts show, fireworks display, music and a weekend of dining and dancing, all to raise money for local charities and local beach re-nourishment and beautification. |

several Pearl Harbor survivors. Note: The Post Office was closed on Sunday, December 7th. History: On the morning of Sunday December 7, 1941 Japan attacked the US Naval Base at Pearl Harbor Hawaii. The Japanese surprise strike consisted of two aerial attack waves comprised of 353 aircraft which were launched from 6 Japanese aircraft carriers. 2,402 Americans were killed and 1,282 injured when Japanese fighters bombed and sank twelve US Naval vessels and heavily damaged nine others. The mortally wounded battleship, USS Arizona entombed 1,177 and the capsized battleship, USS Oklahoma entombed another 419 troops. The dry-docked destroyer, USS Shaw exploded killing 128. "Wilmington was at Pearl Harbor." Three Wilmington troops were killed in action on those ships. Signalman, Harvey Howard Horrell died on the Arizona; Boatswains mate, Herbert Franklin Melton died aboard the Oklahoma; and Radioman, Clyde Carson Moore died on the Shaw. Twenty Wilmington area troops (15 Navy, 3 Army Air force & 2 Army) were stationed in and around Pearl Harbor and 6 area civilians lived or worked there. Japan made this attack as a preventive action to keep the US Pacific Fleet from influencing the war Japan was planning to wage in Southeast Asia against Britain, the Netherlands and the US. It was intended to neutralize the US Pacific Fleet protecting Japan's advances into Malaya and the Dutch East Indies where Japan sought access to oil and rubber natural resources. During the 1930's tensions between the US and Japan steadily increased with the Japanese expansion into Manchuria and French Indochina greeted by steadily increased levels of embargoes and sanctions from the US and other nations. In 1940 under the authority granted by the Export Control Act, the US halted shipments of airplanes, parts, machine tools and aviation gasoline to Japan. The US adopted "Plan Dog" in 1940, which emphasized keeping the Imperial Japanese Navy out of the eastern Pacific and away from the shipping lanes to Australia while the US concentrated on the defeat of Nazi Germany. President Franklin D Roosevelt moved the US Pacific Fleet from San Diego CA to Pearl Harbor HI and ordered a military buildup in the Philippines in the hope of discouraging Japanese aggression in the Far East. Following the Japanese expansion into French Indochina, the US ceased oil exports to Japan in the summer of 1941. By late 1941 US Pacific bases and facilities had been placed on alert on multiple occasions. US officials doubted that Pearl Harbor would be a target in any conflict with Japan. They anticipated that the Philippines would be attacked first and had the erroneous belief that Japan was not capable of mounting more than one major naval operation at a time. History: The Wright brothers, Wilbur and Orville sought a better location for their pioneering aeronautical (aircraft) experiments than their home in Dayton OH. After consulting with the US Weather Bureau, they choose Kitty Hawk NC as a perfect location for their flying experiments. Constant wind, soft sand, gentle dunes, no obstructions coupled with the Wright's mechanical understanding and logical common sense led them to make the first controlled, powered and sustained heavier-than-air human flight on December 17, 1903 at Kill Devil Hills, four miles away from Kitty Hawk NC. The Wright brothers became the first to design and build a flying craft that could be controlled while in the air. Every successful aircraft ever built since, beginning with their 1902 Wright glider, has had controls to roll the wings right or left, pitch the nose up or down, and yaw the nose from side to side. These three controls -- roll, pitch, and yaw -- let a pilot navigate an airplane in all three spacial dimensions, making it possible to fly from one place to another. The entire aerospace business, one of the largest industries in the world, depends on this simple but brilliant idea. With the aviation accomplishments of the Wright brothers, the state of North Carolina had a major claim to fame - "First in Flight." Several traditional events like the Wrightsville Beach " Holiday Flotilla" and "Old Wilmington by Candlelight" set the tone for this festive time of the year. The Festival of Trees celebrates the diversity of worldwide seasonal traditions with beautifully decorated trees, silent auctions, entertainment and holiday shopping. This year the Cameron Art Museum presented "Toy Crazy" which featured a wide variety of toys, from antique to modern, from American to Japanese and from Barbies to Star Wars. Visitors of all ages found something that they played with as a child. The Bellamy Mansion hosted "Jonkonnu," a colorful celebration showing elements of West African traditions. |

History: TreeFest is an annual giveaway of tree seedlings to local residents of Wilmington NC. It was instituted in 1997 as a result of the tree devastation from Hurricanes Bertha and Fran in 1996. The 16th annual Wilmington Garden Show was held on Saturday, January 31st and February 1, 2009 at the Schwartz Center of Cape Fear Community College in downtown Wilmington. At this gardening show there was over 40 booths selling a wide variety of products and services for gardening and landscaping. Venders offered the latest in gardening products in what has been described as a "one-stop event." It's where the public found a hint of early spring in the displays, the plants and decorative items. |

A cover cancelled on February 4, 2009 in Wilmington NC commemorating the 68th Anniversary of the founding of the United Service Organizations (USO). It is autographed by one of Wilmington's civic leaders, Hannah Block. History: There was a build-up of the US military as the threatening WW-II situation intensified. President Franklin D Roosevelt wanted to provide morale and recreation services for US uniformed military personnel. Six civilian agencies including the Salvation Army, YMCA, YWCA, NCCS (National Catholic Community Service), NTAA (National Travelers Aid Association) and the NJWB (National Jewish Welfare Board ) pooled their resources and the United Service Organizations (USO) was incorporated in New York on February 4, 1941. USO centers and clubs quickly opened around the world as a "Home Away from Home" for GIs. The local USO was a place to go for dances and social events, for movies and music, for a quiet place to talk or write a letter home, or for a free cup of coffee and an egg. To support the servicemen and women stationed or training in Southeastern North Carolina, a USO Center was opened in Wilmington a few days before the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 . The Wilmington USO Center (then & now) is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of a handful USO structures still standing in the US. It is an arts resource and a hub of the region's legacy supporting Wilmington's designation as "America's WW-II City." It has been restored to its wartime appearance and is a home-front museum. Over the years the Wilmington USO Center went through several changes. In the 1960's the building’s focus shifted from recreation to the arts. The Arts Council of the Lower Cape Fear made its first headquarters there. In 1973 Wilmington renamed the building the “Community Arts Center.” Today, the building is a major cultural resource for New Hanover County. It hosts crews and production facilities for movies, television shows and commercials. Arts programs are offered to the community in stage and film acting, aerobics, ballet, drawing, fiction writing, guitar, jazz dance, modern dance, monologue, oil painting, pottery, photography, stage dance, stained glass, tap dance, vocal music and yoga. In 1997 the building’s stage was dedicated to one of Wilmington’s greatest civic leaders, Hannah Block. The building itself was rededicated in Hannah Block’s name in 2006. For more than half a century the “Hannah Block Historic USO Building” has facilitated the coming together of generations enhancing the quality of life of residents throughout the region. Hannah Block was born in Portsmouth VA. She attended the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore and worked as a jazz singer and pianist in New York City before the advent of WW-II. In 1945 Hannah came to Wilmington with her husband, Charles Morris Block and over the years she has been deeply involved with Wilmington’s community. In 2009 the USO operates more than 135 centers worldwide, including ten mobile canteens located in the continental United States and overseas. Overseas centers are located in Germany, Italy, the United Arab Emirates, Japan, Qatar, Korea, Iraq, Afghanistan, Guam and Kuwait. History: The North Carolina Jazz Festival began in Wilmington NC in 1980. It was founded by Dr Harry VanVelsor, who in addition to being a Wilmington dermatologist was a consummate jazz lover. Van Velsor used his fondness for Dixieland and Traditional Style Jazz to organize the first Jazz Festival in Wilmington. Over the years the greatest Traditional Jazz artists have brought their musical talents to Wilmington to be a part of this festival. Art Hodes, Milt Hinton, Kenny Davern, Keter Betts, Bobby Rosengarden, Tony DiNicola, and Johnny Frigo are among the late greats who have participated in past festivals. More recently Dick Hyman, Bucky Pizzarelli, Ed Polcer, Houston Person, Wycliffe Gordon, Duke Heitger and Ken Peplowski have performed at the Jazz Festival. The Festival is attracting talent from all over America and around the world. Internationals who have followed their love of jazz to the North Carolina Jazz Festival include Antti Sarpila (Finland), Nicki Parrott (Australia), Bria Skonberg (Canada) and Peter Appleyard, Jim Galloway and Randy Reinhart (Canada). This year Rossano Sportiello (Italy) and Anat Cohen (Israel) will be performing. History: Adjacent to Wilmington NC along the southeastern barrier island coast of North Carolina is a breathtaking stretch of paradise composed of beaches, marinas and the Intra-coastal waterway. One of these beaches is Wrightsville Beach. The island of Wrightsville Beach is 1,000-5,000 feet in width and stretches almost four miles from Masonboro inlet on the south to Mason inlet on the north. History: Prior to the end of the Civil War individuals began collecting the stamps issued by the Confederate States of America. The popularity of stamp collecting increased by the early 1900s inviting fakes and counterfeits to enter the marketplace. In the 1920s authoritative information on Confederate stamps and postal history began to be formalized. August Dietz Sr (Dietz Publishing Company) was the editor of the Southern Philatelist which provided informative articles to aid the increasing number of Confederate stamp collectors. In 1929 Dietz wrote the "The Postal Service of the Confederate States of America" earning him the title of the "Father of Confederate Philately." In February 1935 Dr Marye Y Dabney, an enthusiastic Confederate stamp collector with his friend, August Dietz organized the Confederate Stamp Alliance (CSA) which continued the intensive study of Confederate stamps. CSA held its first national convention in August 1935 in Asheville NC. The CSA was incorporated in Alabama as a non-profit organization on January 15, 1968 and ten years later in June 1978 became an affiliate of the American Philatelic Society. From its early beginnings, the Confederate Stamp Alliance attracts serious collectors and researchers of Confederate philately. |

History: The Ports of Wilmington and Morehead City, North Carolina support the inland terminals in Charlotte and the Piedmont Triad in Greensboro. The Ports are a competitive link from global markets to North Carolina's consumers, businesses and industry and serve as magnets to attract new business and industry to the State. They are owned and operated by the North Carolina State Ports Authority offering terminal facilities serving container, bulk and breakbulk operations. Wilmington is a key player in international trade. The Port of Wilmington installed four new 100-foot post-Panamax container cranes which went into service on April 9, 2007. Additionally, it added nine new container handlers, completed the first phase of a container-terminal expansion and made berth and dockside improvements. This coupled with the 42-foot deep Cape Fear River navigation channel signaled that the Port of Wilmington was ready to accommodate the largest container ships capable of transiting the Panama Canal. The Port of Wilmington is a C-TPAT Certified location and is designated as Foreign Trade Zone 66. The Milken Institute's 2007 Best-Performing Cities Index listed Wilmington as second in the nation against 379 US metropolitan areas it ranks. The rankings consider an area's economic performance and ability to create and keep the greatest number of jobs. It stated, "Port-related activity contributed to growth in other sectors, such as business services and construction. Investments in port infrastructure have lead to improvements in cargo capacity, creating more opportunities for trade linkages and port-related business." |

History: Children using "hands on" learning through play was the motivation behind the concept of a Children's Museum of Wilmington. After several years of research and study by parents, community leaders and educators and with the help of the Junior League of Wilmington, the Wilmington Children's Museum opened on October 10, 1997 on Market Street. In 2003 the Museum welcomed its 100,000th visitor. A year later in 2004 the Museum began a capital campaign and purchased a new larger site at the corner of 2nd and Orange Streets in downtown Wilmington. This former St. John's Museum of Art and now the new Children's Museum of Wilmington was retrofitted with an atrium joining three existing buildings. The new Children's Museum of Wilmington opened on April 23, 2006. With over 17,000 square feet, it had seven new dynamic exhibits, an outdoor courtyard, a secret garden and a gift store. The Museum is flourishing with the continued support of the community and new and repeat visitors. It truly stimulates children's imagination, curiosity and the love of learning. It celebrates the joys of childhood providing magical and playful experiences for children. It provides opportunities for children to explore and better understand the arts, sciences and culture through engaging exhibits and programs. |

History: Attempts to settle the Cape Fear region were made in the 1600's. The first permanent English settlers established themselves in the area in the 1720's. The growth of a village on the Cape Fear River went through several names, earlier called New Liverpool, afterwards called Newton and lastly, Wilmington (1730). The colonial township of Wilmington was incorporated in 1739. It was named in honor of Spencer Compton, the Earl of Wilmington, who was Prime Minister under George II. (TimeLine - How Wilmington Got Its Name) Slavery came early to the region as landowners used slave labor to exploit the region's natural resources. The forest provided the region's major industries through the 18th and most of the 19th century. As of July 1, 2007 Wilmington had grown to a population estimated to be 339,511. The National Trust for Historic Preservation named Wilmington North Carolina one of its 2008 Dozen Distinctive Destinations. Residents have the advantage of living nestled between the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean with Wrightsville Beach a short 20 minute drive from downtown. |

History: The Cape Fear River Watch (CFRW) was founded in Wilmington NC on August 1, 1993 by Bouton Baldridge and Bruce Watkins. They had the vision of creating a nonprofit organization which was open to everyone and dedicated to the improvement and preservation of the health, beauty, cleanliness, and heritage of the Cape Fear River basin. The mission of the CFRW is to protect and improve the water quality of the Lower Cape Fear River Basin through education, advocacy and action. It educates through environmental seminars covering a variety of pertinent topics and issues. Its advocacy focuses on water quality-related issues including environmental development, hog lagoon regulations, wetland preservation and restoration, vegetative wetland retention, oyster re-seeding and recycling. It takes action by organizing clean-ups at Greenfield Lake, Burnt Mill Creek and other local watersheds. Doug Springer is the Executive Director of the Cape Fear River Watch. A cover cancelled on October 3, 2009 in Wilmington NC commemorating the 5th annual "Invasion of the Pirates" in Wilmington. Amongst other pirates, it is autographed by Captain Sinbad (Meka-II) and Pirate Steve Whetzel (Shadow Players).
History: The Feast of Pirates was an annual festival held in Wilmington NC between 1927 and 1929 over a weekend in the month of August. For several days Wilmington embraced this celebration of merriment with a parade, pirate boats on the Cape Fear River and other events all centered around the theme of pirates and rogues that flourished in the sounds, inlets and rivers of North Carolina’s Atlantic coast. In the late 17th and early 18th century numerous pirates pursued their lawless and murderous trade preying upon lightly armed merchant ships delivering goods to coastal cities. Blackbeard was the most notorious pirate in the history of seafaring. With a beard that almost covered his face, he would strike terror into the hearts of his victims. He was a tall man with a menacing appearance who usually wore a crimson coat, two swords at his waist and bandoleers stuffed with numerous pistols and knives across his chest. The sight of Blackbeard was enough to make most of his victims surrender without a fight. His lawless career lasted only a few years but his fearsome reputation has long outlived him. Governor Alexander Spotswood of Virginia sent a Royal Navy contingent to North Carolina where Blackbeard was killed in a bloody battle at Ocracoke Inlet NC on November 22, 1718. Blackbeard had captured over 50 ships during his piratical career and his death ended an era in the history of piracy in America. In 1993 Wilmington NC business owners and local boaters were interested in promoting the orderly development of property and recreational activities along the Wilmington Cape Fear riverfront. To this end the Wilmington Harbor Enhancement Trust (WHET) was formed. WHET set out to provide floating docks and facilities for boaters visiting Wilmington from their seaborne travels on the Cape Fear River, Atlantic Ocean and Intracoastal Waterway. It provides transient and short term boaters with a place to dock while dining, shopping or just visiting Wilmington friends. In 2005 WHET made an effort to put more "river" into Wilmington's annual Riverfest celebration with the inclusion of the "Invasion of the Pirates." The 2009 Wilmington "Riverfest" pirate invasion began with the friendly assult of Captain Horatio Sinbad in his Meka-II pirate ship. He sailed up the Cape Fear River with guns blazing at fortifications along the river shore. This modern day swashbuckler, born 250 years too late followed his pirate-privateer code, "To rule the waves you wave the rules" as he came ashore at the foot of Market Street. The pirates of the Meka-II joined their comrades-in-arms (Shadow Players) brawling cutlass to cutlass with swordplay and merriment. Pirate Mantise Sevalle (Steve Whetzel) along with his scallywags, lasses, ladies and rascals demonstrated pirates fighting with period weapons. The cover has a special "Beach Post" label (Issue #3) in addition to a US Postage Lighthouse stamp which was cancelled at Wilmington's Myrtle Grove Postal Station. History: Masonboro Island is the largest undisturbed barrier island along the southern part of the North Carolina coast. It is a pristine barrier island and estuary system where tidal ocean salt waters meet river fresh waters. Adjacent to Wilmington, it is a state controlled wildlife preserve that has long been a popular recreation spot and destination for boating, surfing and camping. In 1983 a small group of people joined together to preserve Masonboro Island forming a nonprofit environmental group, the Society for Masonboro Island. Its main goal was to keep the entire island pristine and natural. It set out to find funding to acquire portions of the island that were owned by private parties transferring them to state ownership. Funding was secured from the National Estuarine Sanctuary Program (later named, the National Estuarine Research Reserve System). The acquisition process was slow because many of the tracts were only a few acres and many involved multiple family members owning a single tract.. Pursuant to keeping the island pristine and natural, the Society continued to manage the island and educate the public about its natural history. Under the Coastal Land Trust the responsibilities of Masonboro Island management have passed to the North Carolina Division of Coastal Management and the North Carolina Coastal Resources Commission to maintain the island as a state controlled wildlife preserve. This objective must mesh with the island continuing to be a popular recreation spot and destination for boating, surfing and camping. Accessible only by boat, Masonboro Island has become the destination of choice for thousands of people on Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day weekends. All options are being considered to find a mutual solution balancing wildlife preserve objectives with recreation and tourism. Amongst them are access and use restrictions, raising awareness and responsibilities, encouraging folks to clean up after themselves, increasing law-enforcement’s presence, banning alcohol, banning glass and Styrofoam, trash collection, handling and removal and public sanitation. Since Masonboro Island is technically not a state park there is no funding or staff to clean up and this leaves that job to dedicated volunteers. Recreational and tourist use of Masonboro Island must follow the “use but don’t abuse” philosophy to perpetuate the island’s natural function and beauty. Scouting began in Wilmington as early as October 1911. In September 1914 Odis B Hinnant arrived in Wilmington to become the director of the YMCA’s Boys’ Department where he established Scouting as a major youth program. Odis served as the Scouting Commissioner until his departure from Wilmington in April 1926. On March 17, 1916 the five Wilmington scout troops held their first annual banquet at the YMCA building. Following the banquet, the Wilmington Council, BSA was organized with BA Merritt as its first president. On October 4, 1926 Floyd Griffith became the first Scout Executive of the newly renamed New Hanover County Council. It’s charter was received on July 18, 1927. On September 29, 1928 the charter for the renamed Wilmington Area Council was received and on July 1, 1929 the Cape Fear Area Council was formed. Today the Council operates with six Districts; Western, Central, Lakes, Masonboro, Northeast Cape Fear and Brunswick. The BSA operates through dens, packs and troops sponsored and operated by churches, clubs, civic associations, educational organizations, etc. These are led by volunteers who are supported by local councils using both paid professionals and volunteers. For younger boys (from the first to fifth-grades - 5 to 11 years) a program of Cub Scouting was formed. It was designed to have the boys doing things while pursuing their character development, citizenship training and personal fitness. It is broken down into age-based levels of Tiger Cubs, Wolf, Bear, and Webelos Scouts. Carolina Beach Scout Pack #210 celebrated its 35th anniversary on March 10, 2010. |

4392 | A cover cancelled on August 6, 2010 in Wilmington NC documenting the visit of the USCGC Eagle to Wilmington. History: Blohm & Voss in Hamburg, Germany laid the ship’s keel on February 15, 1936. She was launched on June 13th, completed on September 16th and commissioned as the SSS Horst Wessel on September 17, 1936. Her name was given in tribute to Nazi party member, Horst Wessel. Adolf Hitler and Rudolph Hess were present at her launch and christening. Initially she was commanded by Captain August Thiele and was home-ported in Kiel, Germany where she served as the flagship of the Kriegsmarine sail training fleet. In the years before the start of WW-II she undertook numerous training cruises in European waters and visited the Caribbean. She was decommissioned in 1939 at the onset of the war but served as a docked training ship until her recommissioning in late 1942. At the end of WW-II she was distributed as a war reparation to the United States. On May 15, 1946 she was commissioned into the US Coast Guard and sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to Orangeburg, NY before being assigned to her home port in New London, CT. The Eagle, known as America’s Tall Ship is stationed at the US Coast Guard Academy on the Thames River in New London CT. Captain Eric C. Jones is the Commanding Officer of the USCGC Eagle. On training missions she carries a complement of 12 officers and a crew between 68 and 150 cadets. A pair of covers cancelled on October 25, 2010 in Wilmington NC commemorating the dedication of the "WW-II New Hanover County Aviator's Memorial" at the Hannah Block Historic USO. The covers are autographed by WW-II veterans and dignitaries. History: On July 11, 2008 it was proclaimed that Wilmington is "America's WW-II City" (see 2008 cover above). Two years later the WW-II Wilmington Home Front Heritage Coalition dedicated the “WW-II New Hanover County Aviator’s Memorial” at the Hannah Block Historic USO. This memorial recognizes more than 120 County residents who were pilots, bombardiers, navigators and crewmen who flew for the Army Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard in WW-II. Sadly, 39 of these US military personnel gave their lives for the freedom we have in these United States. The dedication ceremony was attended by many veterans and their spouses along with many concerned Wilmington residents. Mike McIntyre (7th District, NC), Bill Saffo (Mayor) and Jason Thompson (Chairman, County Commissioners) spoke to the dedication audience, while Captain Wilbur Jones was the MC for the event program. WW-II aviators, Norman Davis and Buck Barden and local aviation historian, Anna Pennington unveiled the memorial. History: Armistice Day is the anniversary of the symbolic end of WW-I on November 11, 1918. It commemorates the armistice signed between the Allies and Germany at Compiègne France, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front, which took effect at eleven o'clock in the morning - the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month." The date was a national holiday in many of the former allied nations to allow people to commemorate those members of the armed forces who were killed during war. After WW-II, it was changed to Veterans Day in the United States and to Remembrance Day in the British Commonwealth of Nations. Armistice Day is an official holiday in France. It is also an official holiday in Belgium, known also as the day of peace in the Flanders Fields. |

History: The commissioning ceremony marks a ship's entry into active service in the US Navy. At the moment the commissioning pennant breaks the masthead, the USS Gravely became a Navy command in her own right taking its place alongside the active ships in the US Naval fleet. Many dignitaries attended the commissioning ceremony in Wilmington NC. Wilmington Mayor - Bill Saffo and his wife, Renee welcomed the USS Gravely to Wilmington. Captain Douglas W Kunzman, Commanding Officer of the USS Gravely (DDG-107) expressed his thanks to the shipbuilders, Northrop Grumman Shipbuilders/Supship Gulf Coast, to his crew of talented sailors and to the people of the US, of North Carolina, of Wilmington, the warm and hospitable city chosen for this commissioning ceremony. Kunzman’s oldest son, Derek did a fly-over in a Navy EA-6B Prowler. aircraft. Commander Kunzman gave special recognition to the ship’s sponsor, Alma Gravely and to her late husband, Vice Admiral Samuel L Gravely. Gravely was the first African-American commissioned from the Navy Reserve officer Training Corps. He was the first African-American to command a US Navy warship (Theodore E Chandler), the first African-American to command a warship in combat (Taussig), the first African-American to rise to the rank of Vice Admiral and the first African-American to command a US Fleet (US 3rd Fleet). A commissioning program marked this special occassion. History: Founded in 1932, the Universal Ship Cancellation Society (USCS) is an international philatelic organization of over 1,100 members with an interest in postmarks and covers from all maritime services. This includes Navy ships of all countries, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Navy bases, merchant ships with seapost and paquebot markings, related cachets, and other naval memorabilia. It is the only organization in the United States devoted to Navy and maritime covers, and is one of the oldest specialized postal history societies in the world. commemorating the 70th anniversary of the commissioning of the USS North Carolina. History: The USS North Carolina battleship (BB-55) was built in the Brooklyn Navy Yard in New York City. Her keel was laid in October 27, 1937 and she was launched into the East River on June 13, 1940. Armaments were added and she was fitted-out for her mission during late 1940 and early 1941. The USS North Carolina was commissioned on April 9, 1941. When Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese on December 7, 1941, she was undergoing shakedown and training cruises in the Atlantic. She was directed to the Pacific in June 1942 and took part in the Solomons campaign. She covered the initial landings on Guadalcanal and participated in the Battle of the Eastern Solomons in August 1942 when she was damaged by a Japanese submarine torpedo. After being repaired at Pearl Harbor Navy Yard, she returned to the Solomons combat zone toward the end of 1942. In November 1943 she assisted in capturing enemy positions in the Gilbert Islands. This began a pattern of operations for her that lasted for the rest of WW-II. She served in the anti-aircraft screen of aircraft carrier task forces and used her heavy guns to bombard Japanese-held islands. During 1944 she was involved in the Marshalls operation in January-February, attacks on Central Pacific targets through the late winter and spring, the Marianas invasion and Battle of Philippine Sea in June, and Western Pacific carrier strikes in November and December. The USS North Carolina continued her Western Pacific activities in 1945 participating in the invasions of Iwo Jima in February and Okinawa in March and April. She also screened carriers on raids throughout the combat zone including attacks on the Japanese home islands. She was off-Japan in August and September during Japan's surrender. The USS North Carolina returned to the US in October 1945 and operated in the Atlantic until she was inactivated in 1946. She was decommissioned in June 1947 and became part of the "mothball" fleet until stricken from the Navy list in June 1960. On October 2, 1961 she arrived at her current berth in Wilmington NC. Later the next year, on April 25, 1962 the USS North Carolina was officially dedicated as North Carolina's museum and memorial to its WW-II veterans. History: Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. It is currently observed on the last Monday of May. Memorial Day was officially proclaimed on May 5, 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic and was first observed on May 30, 1868, when flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. By 1890 it was recognized by all of the Northern states. The South honored their dead on separate days until after WW-I when the holiday changed from honoring just those who died fighting in the Civil War to honoring Americans who died fighting in any war. In the National Holiday Act of 1971, Congress created a three day Memorial weekend holiday at the end of May. It set aside a time for the nation to get together to remember, reflect and honor those who have given their all in service to their country. Flag waving Americans visit cemeteries or memorials, hold family gatherings and participate in parades. Amongst many Memorial events in Wilmington, a traditional observance was held at the Battleship North Carolina. It included a guest speaker, an all-service color guard, a 21-gun salute by the Marine Corps Honor Guard, a military band, taps and the placing of a memorial wreath. |

The top cover was cancelled in Carolina Beach NC on July 1, 1971 commemorating the inauguration of the USPS. The middle cover was cancelled in Jamaica NY on July 1, 1971 and was cancelled a second time in Wilmington NC on July 1, 2011 recognizing the 40th anniversary of the creation of the USPS. The bottom cover was cancelled in Wilmington NC on July 1, 2011. Of noteworthy interest is that these covers contain the USPS stamp issued in 1971 as well as the North Carolina Flags of Our Nation stamp issued in 2010. History: On July 26, 1775 the Second Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia established an American Post Office with Ben Franklin as Postmaster General. It provided a line of posts from Falmouth in New England to Savannah, Georgia. In 1792 the Post Office was elevated to a cabinet-level Department remaining that way until the Postal Reorganization Act was approved by Congress on August 12, 1970. This Act created the US Postal Service (USPS) to become effective on July 1, 1971 as an independent agency of the US government responsible for providing postal service in the United States. It was directed to improve its performance through the development of efficient mail-handling systems and to operate its own planning and engineering programs. Additionally, it was responsible for protecting the mails from loss or theft and apprehending those who violate postal laws. The USPS is headed by the postmaster general who through its board of governors supervise approximately 38,000 post offices, branches, stations and community post offices throughout the US. On October 5, 1789 the first postmaster, John Bradley was assigned to Wilmington to operate the post office as a colonial office. Early Wilmington post offices were located in stores and hotels and the Postmasters were paid by a percentage of the mail they processed. The first post office in Wilmington was located in the old Custom House which was completed in 1846. It remained in that Federal Building until 1874 when a two-story brick building was erected on the southwest corner of Second and Chestnut Streets. In 1888 the construction of a main post office began on the site of the former home of RR Bridges at the corner of Front and Chestnut Streets. It was completed in 1891 and was made of brown granite from Wadesboro NC. It had two faces carved over the entrance, one happy and the other, dejected. Patrons rumored that one face had received a letter and the other received none. It was locally called the, "Brownstone Post Office." |

NC remembering the 10th Anniversary of the Islamic terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York City, United Airlines Flight #93 and
the Pentagon.
History: On September 11, 2001 there were a series of coordinated suicide attacks (aka 9/11) by al-Qaeda upon the United States. Nineteen Islamic terrorists (al-Qaeda) hijacked four US commercial passenger jet airliners. The hijackers intentionally crashed two of the airliners into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, crashed a third airliner into the Pentagon and a fourth crashed into a field in Shanksville PA before reaching targets in Washington DC. There were no survivors on any of the flights. 2,974 people died in these attacks and 24 were missing and presumed dead. The majority of casualties were civilians including nationals of over 90 different countries. NEVER FORGET |

NC commemorating the 125th Anniversary of the American Philatelic Society (America's Stamp Club).
History: (from the APS web-site) ~ Starting with a few enthusiasts in the 1850s, the hobby of collecting postage stamps and related items grew steadily for three decades. By the 1880s there were an estimated 25,000 stamp collectors in the United States. In 1886 several prominent stamp collectors began discussing the possibility of forming a national organization of philatelists. Thus by April of 1886 they had formed The Committee on National Organization (S.B. Bradt, O.S. Hellwig, and R.R. Shuman) and printed an announcement of the possible formation of a national organization. Following this effort and those of others, some 400 collectors indicated their willingness to assist in founding such an organization. A total of 219 sent in their proxies, each paying twenty-five cents for the privilege of voting by proxy. A committee met in New York City on September 13, 1886, and adopted the name "American Philatelic Association" for the newly formed organization. The following day, John K. Tiffany, a prominent St. Louis attorney, and ardent philatelist, was elected president, a position he held until 1896. The preamble to the Association's constitutiion was included as follows:"The objects of this Association are, to assist its members in acquiring knowledge in regard to Philately; to cultivate a feeling of friendship among philatelists; and to enable them to affiliate with members of similar societies in other countries." Dues were set at $2 per year and the pro-rated dues basis was established where members pay only for the balance of the year remaining. Membership cards were provided to members and a button badge by which members may be recognized was authorized and sold to members for $1, the design is still used today as the APS logo. In 1897 the name of the organization was changed briefly to American Philatelic Society, but was changed back to American Philatelic Association after only a few months. The name was changed again to American Philatelic Society at the 1908 convention, and has remained as such since that time. The Wilmington Philatelic Society is a Charter Member of the APS. |

History: The United States Navy traces its origins to the Continental Navy, which the Continental Congress established on October 13, 1775, by authorizing the procurement, fitting out, manning, and dispatch of two armed vessels to cruise in search of munitions ships supplying the British Army in America. October 13th is recognized as the birthday of the US Navy. The Constitution of the United States, ratified in 1789, empowered Congress "to provide and maintain a navy." Acting on this authority, Congress ordered the construction and manning of six frigates in 1794, and the War Department administered naval affairs from that year until Congress established the Department of the Navy on April 30, 1798. The Navy League was founded in 1902 as a citizen's organization to serve, support, and stand with all the sea services - US Navy, US Marine Corps, US Coast Guard and US Flag Merchant Marines. The Navy League sponsored the first national observance of Navy Day on October 27, 1922. Navy Day was designed to give recognition to both the Navy and to honor President Theodore Roosevelt who had been born on that day and who had encouraged the founding of the Navy League. On August 31, 1949 Louis A Johnson (Secretary of the newly created Department of Defense) announced the replacement of separate Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force Days with Armed Forces Day to be celebrated on May 27th. Navy Day was last officially observed on October 27, 1949. Some continue to unofficially remember Navy Day on October 27th. |

NC commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the first air mail flight in North Carolina flown at Wilmington by pilot, Walter Brookins.
History: Bad weather on January 1st prevented the flight from taking place. The next day the weather cleared and pilot, Walter Brookins flew his Wright-Breguet aeroplane carrying a mailbag with approximately 1,600 pieces of mail (canceled on Januaury 1, 1912) over a distance of three miles. The mailbag was dropped by Brookins over Winter Park and was then retrieved by a postal clerk transporting it the post office by automobile for further dispatch in the postal system. Wilmington Postmaster, Thomas E Wallace authorized the establishment of a postal sub-station at Highwood Park Race Track and this aerial transport of mail. |

Equality | A cover cancelled on June 27, 2012 in Wilmington NC commemorating the Congressional Gold Medal award to the first Black marines (from Wilmington NC) to enter the US Marine Corps at the Montford Point Marine Camp. The cover is autographed by FM Hooper Jr (Montford Pointer, USMC retired). History: President, Franklin D Roosevelt issued Executive Order #8802 on June 25, 1941 establishing the fair employment practice that began to erase discrimination in the Armed Forces. Brigadier General, Keller E Rocher headed a board organized to study the integration of Blacks into the military. Later in 1942 Roosevelt issued a directive allowing Blacks the opportunity to be recruited into the Marine Corps. Instead of being assigned to Marine boot camps at Paris Island SC or San Diego CA, the Blacks were segregated with basic training at the Montford Point Camp adjacent to Camp Lejeune NC. Between 1942/49 approximately twenty thousand Black Marines received their basic training at Montford Point and became known as the Montford Pointers. Regardless of race, color or creed, the Montford Pointers were US Marines. President, Harry S. Truman issued Executive Order #9981 in July 1948 ending segregation in the Armed Forces. The Montford Point Camp was deactivated in September, 1949. On April 19, 1974 it was renamed Camp Johnson in honor of the late Sergeant Major, Gilbert "Hashmark" Johnson. Johnson was one of the first Blacks to join the Marines becoming a drill instructor and veteran of both WW-II and Korea. Camp Johnson is the only Marine Corps installation whose namesake honors Black heritage. A contingent of Montford Pointers from Wilmington NC received the Congressional Gold Medal in Washington DC on June 27, 2012. Included were Wilmingtonians, FM Hooper Jr, James Wilson, Ivan LeBlanc, Howard Spencer and Wilson Thigpen. |

History: "Curiosity" was a car-sized robotic Mars-Rover designed for exploring the surface of Mars as part of NASA's Exploration Program and the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) Mission. "Curiosity" was launched from Cape Canaveral FL on November 26, 2011 aboard an Atlas 5 Rocket. After a 350,000,000 mile trip through space, It landed on Aeolis Palus in Gale Crater on Mars on August 6, 2012. The threefold goal of this Martian mission included: 1) The investigation of the climate and geology of Mars. 2) The assessment of whether the selected field site inside Gale Crater has ever offered environmental conditions favorable for microbial life including the investigation of the role of water. 3) Planetary habitability studies in preparation for future human exploration. |

NC commemorating the 200th Anniversary of Wilmington's militia muster in the "War of 1812."
History: At the outset of the 19th century, Great Britain was locked in a conflict with Napoleon Bonaparte's France. In an attempt to cut off supplies from reaching each other, both European countries attempted to block the US from trading with the other. In March 1808 a naval contract was awarded to Amos Perry to build three gunboats (Gunboats 166, 167 & 168) at his factory located south of Wilmington NC at Smithville (now Southport). As the war clouds appeared on the horizon, Gunboat 166 was reactivated and later was renamed the US Schooner "Alligator." She patrolled the southeastern Atlantic coast of the US. The British attempted to restrict US trade by the impressment of US seamen and by restricting the US's desire to expand its territory. By late 1811 the "War Hawks" in Congress were putting more and more pressure on President Madison so on June 18, 1812 the US signed a declaration of war against Britain. Most Western and Southern congressmen supported war, while the Federalists (New Englanders who relied heavily on trade with Britain) accused war advocates of using the excuse of maritime rights to promote their expansionist agenda. The US government was very disorganized and slow about equipping the militia and defending North Carolina's coast. In Wilmington, the New Hanover "Troop of Horse" a volunteer organization under the command of Colonel Nathaniel Hill mustered with the militia. Around August 15, 1812 the militia at Fort Johnston, south of Wilmington reported for duty without uniforms. They served their entire time without being paid and had to go home without any money when they were released. By October 17, 1813 the British HMS Recruit instituted a close blockade of Wilmington. The US suffered many defeats at the hands of British, Canadian and Native Americans over the course of the War of 1812, including the capture and burning of the US Capital and White House in Washington, DC in August 1814. American troops were able to repulse British invasions in New York, Baltimore and New Orleans boosting national confidence and fostering a new spirit of patriotism. On September 13, 1814 Baltimore's Fort McHenry withstood 25 hours of bombardment by the British Navy. The following morning, the Fort's soldiers hoisted an enormous American flag, a sight that inspired Francis Scott Key to write a poem he titled "The Star-Spangled Banner." Militia from Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, Cumberland, Duplin, New Hanover, Robeson and Sampson counties were called into service at Wilmington by orders issued September 29, 1814. Although not many Tar Heels engaged in military combat, those who did made excellent records of themselves. The total number of North Carolinians killed in combat was eighteen. On December 24, 1814 the Treaty of Ghent ended the "War of 1812." It was ratified by the US on January 8, 1815 but with the lack of communication, the British mounted a major after-the-war attack on New Orleans only to be defeated by the US. The US celebrated the War of 1812 as a "second war of Independence," beginning an era of American pride. |

History: Some people may be believers in numerology. Some may be superstitious. 10-10-10 came without incident in 2010. 11-11-11 came and went in 2011 and how we are at 12-12-12. 12-12-12 is the last triple digit day of this century. And yes, it's "A Great Day to Be Here." We need to guard our hearts from becoming too upset in these troubled times. There are real reasons to be disillusioned with the federal government. There are reasons to be concerned about public education. There are reasons to be concerned about an impending national health mandatory system in the US. There are reasons to be concerned about the US economy and the availability of jobs. We do our best in dealing with challenges that we can reasonably anticipate like hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, storms, earthquakes, lightning, etc. When the times are good, we should celebrate that too. Today, 12-12-12 in Wilmington NC at 12 noon 12 members of the Wilmington Tree Commission will participate in the planting of 12 longleaf pine seedings. The 12 longleaf pines will be planted adjacent to the Cross City Trail bridge at the foot of Rosemont Avenue in Helen McCrary Park. They were donated by Lowes Home Improvement. |

NC commemorating the 5th Anniversary of the Wilmington commissioning of the USS North Carolina (SSN-777).
History: The commissioning ceremony marks a ship's entry into active service in the US Navy. At the moment the commissioning pennant breaks the masthead, the USS North Carolina became a Navy command in her own right taking its place alongside the active ships in the US Naval fleet. Many dignitaries attended the commissioning ceremony in Wilmington NC. Amongst many congradulatory letters, President George Bush sent his congradulations. Additionally, Captain Mark Davis, Commanding Officer of the USS North Carolina (SSN-777) expressed his thanks to the shipbuilders, Northrop Grumman Newport News and General Dynamics Electric Boat, to his crew of talented sailors and to the people of the US, of North Carolina, of Wilmington, the warm and hospitable city chosen for this commissioning ceremony. A commissioning program marked this special occassion. |

NC commemorating the 10th Anniversary of Wilmington NC as a Coast Guard City.
History: The United States Congress (Act of Congress) has recognized selected cities in the US as a "Coast Guard City." This designation is granted for five year periods subject to Congressional renewal. For a city to be recognized as a "Coast Guard City" it must have made special efforts to acknowledge the professional work of the Coast Guard men and women assigned to their area by regularly reaching out to them and their families and making them feel "at-home at their home-away-from-home." Such city efforts should be indicative of a longstanding and enduring relationship, a partnership between the city and members of the Coast Guard family and their dependents. It is important to note that there has been a Coast Guard Cutter stationed in Wilmington almost continually since 1792. The current Cutter in Wilmington is called "Diligence." It is the sixth Coast Guard cutter to have the name "Diligence" and has been assigned to Wilmington since 1992. There have been six cutters named "Diligence" and five of these have been home-ported in Wilmington. Diligence #1 through #4 were based in Wilmington from 1792 to 1830's while Diligence #5 saw duty from 1919 to 1961 in New York NY, Boston MA, Cleveland OH and Long Beach CA. Since Diligence #1 (one of the first original ten Coast Guard "Revenue Cutters") was based in Wilmington NC, it is fitting that the current Diligence #6 is also based here. The US Coast Guard bestowed the title of "Coast Guard City" to Wilmington NC during a recertification ceremony on July 26, 2008. Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo said, "Wilmington truly values its relationship with the Coast Guard and will continue to strive to live up to the honor of being a Coast Guard City." Representative Mike McIntyre (NC's 7th Congressional District) said, "Because of their readiness, the Coast Guard has given us a history to be proud of, a heritage to treasure and a hope for tomorrow." As part of the recertification ceremony Coast Guard Seaman Houston Edwards and Petty Officer 3rd Class Joseph Harris (Coast Guard Station Oak Island NC) accepted a wreath from Representative Mike McIntire and Mayor Bill Saffo. The wreath was dedicated to honor US servicemen and women, both past and present and was placed in the Cape Fear River. of the World Trade Center, United Airlines Flight #93 and the Pentagon.
History: On September 11, 2001 there were a series of coordinated suicide attacks (aka 9/11) by al-Qaeda upon the United States. Nineteen Islamic terrorists (al-Qaeda) hijacked four US commercial passenger jet airliners. The hijackers intentionally crashed two of the airliners into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, crashed a third airliner into the Pentagon and a fourth crashed into a field in Shanksville PA before reaching targets in Washington DC. There were no survivors on any of the flights. 2,974 people died in these attacks and 24 were missing and presumed dead. The majority of casualties were civilians including nationals of over 90 different countries. ALWAYS REMEMBER |

NC commemorating the 225th Anniversary (1788~2013) of the Thalian Association (Offical Community Theater of North Carolina).
History: Thalian is derived from the Greek muse of comedy, Thalia. The Thalian Association has emerged from a succession of amateur theatrical companies active in Wilmington for more than 225 years. On September 28, 1788 the first "theatrical troupe" was organized in Wilmington NC. For its performances, it used the theater-stage at Innes Academy, then located at the northeast corner of Third and Princess Streets. This Academy was named after James Innes who came to the Cape Fear area about 1735. On April 28, 1803, the trustees of the Academy sought bids for "a house in the town of Wilmington suitable for an Academy and Theatre." When the theater was substantially completed in December 1806, the performering theater company morphed into becoming the Thalian Association. As the years passed the Academy was the predominant venue and site for performances of drama in Wilmington encouraging both the Thalian Association and professional touring companies to perform here. On August 12, 1856 the Thalian Association transferred its interest in the Innes Academy to the City of Wilmington. In return the Thalian Association was granted a lease for Thalian Hall located in the east wing of the new Wilmington City Hall. The construction of Thalian Hall was completed in 1858 when Wilmington was the largest city in the state of NC. The new Thalian Hall had its gala opening on October 12, 1858. The Thalian Association has presented at least one production each year since WW-II. |

NC commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Learjet's first flight.
History: William Powell Lear was a prolific inventor whose achievements included the first successful car radio, the first eight-track stereo tape system, navigational radio systems and direction finders for civil and military aircraft. In 1922 Lear formed the Radio Wire and Coil Company and later created the Motorola Corporation. He founded Lear Inc which was merged with the Siegler Corp in the 1950s converting Lockheed Loadstar aircraft into executive Learstar business configurations. Lear sold his interest in Lear Siegler in 1959 retiring to Switzerland where he conceived the design of a small business jet aircraft setting up the Swiss American Aircraft Corporation. With his son, Bill Lear Jr they attempted to redesign a Swiss FFA P-16 jet attack-fighter for commercial use. This project was terminated without success. Lear moved back to the Wichita KS in 1962 setting up Learjet Corp to develop and manufacture a small business jet aircraft. The prototype Learjet (Model 23) made its first flight on October 7, 1963. This aircraft crashed during testing the following June but on July 31, 1964 was granted an FAA certificate for production. The Model 23 was replaced by the Model 24 in 1966. This was a considerably modified development to meet FAA certification requirements. It was soon joined by the stretched Model 25 with a maximum on ten seats, still powered by General Electric CJ610 engines. In 1966 the name of the company was changed to Learjet Industries acquiring Brantly Helicopters and the subsequent development of the Gates Twinjet Helicopter. On April 10, 1967 the Gates Rubber Company brought a controlling interest and two years later on April 2, 1969, Bill Lear resigned as Chairman of the Board. Gates renamed the company Gates Learjet Corporation and sold Brantly in 1969. With technological advances, the Model 35 (short-range) and the Model 36 (long-range) were made. On June 29, 1990 the Canadian manufacturing company, Bombardier acquired Gates Learjet. The Model 45 made its first flight on October 7, 1995 exactly 32 years after the first Learjet took to the skies. Model 54/55/56 series used the Longhorn wing and had larger cabins. Certified in January 1993, the Model 60 became the fastest business jet. International records achieved by Learjet include the first round-the-world flight by a business jet in a standard Model 24 traveling 22,993 miles in 50 hours 20 minutes flying time, with a total elapsed time of 65 hours 4 minutes. The crew included Hank Beaird, John Lear (Bill's son), Rick King and journalist, John Zimmerman. In May 1976 Arnold Palmer, golf celebrity and pilot together with two Learjet pilots, James E Bir and Lewis L Purkey and aviation writer, Robert Serling set a business jet speed record (48 hours 48 minutes flying time) circumnavigating round-the-world in a Model 36. |

NC commemorating Veteran's Day with a special pictorial postmark (Kilroy was Here) for the Battleship North Carolina's salute to all veterans.
History: "KILROY WAS HERE" is an American popular culture expression that was associated with United States servicemen during World War-II. It is typically seen in graffiti as a doodle of a bald-headed man with his nose peeking over a wall with the fingers of each hand clutching the wall. Servicemen would draw the "KILROY WAS HERE" doodle-expression on the walls and other places they were stationed, encamped or visited. An ad in Life Magazine noted that WW-II servicemen were fond of claiming that "whatever beach-head they stormed, they always found notices chalked up ahead of them, that 'KILROY WAS HERE.'" One popular story of the origin of this doodle-expression goes back to the Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts. This shipyard built US submarines, battleships and aircraft carriers to support the WW-II war effort. J.J.Kilroy was a rivet counter at the shipyard. The riveters were paid by the number of rivets they installed per work shift. Kilroy developed his counting system to prevent any rivet miscounts between riveter's shifts by painting "KILROY WAS HERE" at the end of each riveters seam of installed rivets. Ships were expedited into service without any repainting so servicemen later became aware of Kilroy's doodle-expression all over these ships. Kilroy's mysterious apparent omnipresence became a lasting slogan for US GI's who repeatedly drew "KILROY WAS HERE" throughout WW-II sparking a legend. |

History: The date 11/12/13 (November 12, 2013) has three consecutive numbers making it arithmetically appealing. Humans like seeing patterns in the randomness of life as it gives them an illusion of control over the passage of time. Moving ahead with extended arithmetical detail at 2:15PM & 16 seconds on November 11, 2013, the month/day/year/hour/minute/second would be: 11/12/13/14:15-16. Moving back to 10 minutes after 9AM on the same day, the hour/minute/month/day/year would be 9/10/11/12/13. According to an annual survey from David's Bridal (Mayfare Towne Center, Wilmington NC) more than 3,000 weddings are said to have taken place in the US on November 12, 2013 compared with 371 weddings on the same day in 2012. Humans seem to be drawn to arithmetically appealing "lucky numbers," the gambling expectation of which will bring them good fortune. After 11/12/13 there will be another numerical anomaly sequential date on December 13, 2014 (12/13/14). Then on January 2, 2034, it will be 1/2/34. Ninety years from now, there will be another month/day/year consecutive number anomaly on January 2, 2103 (1/2/3). |

History: The Wilmington Philatelic Society (WPS) is a stamp club located in Wilmington, North Carolina. Everyone with an interest in any branch of philatelic collecting is welcome to visit or join. The WPS meets at 7 pm on the second Tuesday of each month at the Pearsall Memorial Presbyterian Church fellowship hall, 3902 Market Street, Wilmington NC. The church is located across from Howard Johnson Express Inn. There is a large parking area next to the fellowship hall. Please use the side entrance on the right. Each meeting has a central theme such as auctions, presentations, discussions and open stamp trading & selling. Visitors are welcome and may display personal stamps for evaluation and sale except during auction nights and special meetings in June, September and December. WPS Logo: Wilmington was the home of Mrs. Anna Matilda McNeill Whisler. The stamp on our Logo includes a reproduction of the painting by James Abbot McNeill Whistler entitled, "Portrait of My Mother." She was honored on the stamp (Scott #737 & 738) which was issued as a tribute to American mothers and first sold on May 2, 1934. It is known as the "Mother's Day" stamp. NC commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Pearsall Memorial Church.
History: Pearsall Memorial Presbyterian Church was established by the Wilmington Presbytery on June 7, 1914. When Pearsall held its first services, the Wilmington Star Newspaper called it "a handsome brick structure fitted up with electric lights, heated with hot air, and furnished with the latest church furniture and equipment." The church building and surrounding land were presented as a gift to Wilmington Presbytery by Wilmington businessman, Oscar Pearsall as a memorial to his wife Rachel Herring Pearsall who passed away in 1901. Pearsall's longtime pastor Rev. Dr B Frank Hall, was the church's pastor from 1949 to 1977. During that time, he wrote a Sunday column on religion for the Wilmington Star-News, sharing his spiritual insights with the community. In 1963 Rev. Hall joined the faculty of Wilmington College and started the Department of Philosophy and Religion, which grew through the decades to include 17 full time faculty members. In 1969 Wilmington College became the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. Throughout its one hundred year history, Pearsall Memorial Presbyterian Church has been called "The Little Church That Could!" |

History: In numerology, the number 12 is considered the number of divine organizational arrangement or chronological completeness. Our year has 12 months, our clock face is divided into 12 hours, there were 12 deities of Olympus, there were 12 tribes of Israel, there were 12 Apostles of Jesus, there are 12 signs of the Zodiac, the quantity of 12 has been given the special name - dozen, etc. Noteworthy, there were 12 Americans (humans) who walked on our Moon. The number 13 has been considered irregular, transgressing the chronological completeness of the number 12. It is considered unlucky by Western superstition. There were 13 people at the Last Supper on Thursday and on the next day, Friday Jesus was crucified. For the superstitious, the simultaneous occurrence of Friday, the 13th with the Moon Phase of Full Moon deserves added attention. This only occurs when 3 independent variables line-up - the moon phase, the weekday and the day of the month. This previously occurred on October 13, 2000 and after June 13, 2014, will happen again on August 13, 2049. Many enjoy such events with a "Wilmington Water Tour" cruise on the Cape Fear River. The Moon and its movement of the tides energizes the imagination. Look at the Moon and reflect that 12 Americans (humans) walked on its surface. |

History: The Fourth of July commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence by delegates from the 13 colonies in 1776. The Declaration of Independence is America's revolutionary Charter of Freedom and the document upon which our nation's founding principles were established. From the Declaration of Independence: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." On this Fourth of July, Americans will re-dedicate their "Service over Self (SOS) defending America's unalienable Rights of Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." The below true stories bolster the concept of Service over Self....... Story One: On the morning of Sunday December 7, 1941 Japan attacked the US Naval Base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The Japanese surprise strike consisted of two aerial attack waves comprised of 353 aircraft which were launched from 6 Japanese aircraft carriers. The US had to strike back at Japan's homeland as soon as possible to bolster American morale and to cause the Japanese people to begin to doubt their misguided leadership. The Japanese people had been told they were invulnerable. The US mobilized its assets for the "Doolittle Raid." The attack was planned and led by James "Jimmy" Doolittle, a noted civilian aviator and aeronautical engineer. The B-25B Mitchell Bomber was selected to carry out this raid. They were retrofitted and the most experienced crews were organized to carry out this mission. The mission involved aircraft carrier deck takeoffs, low-level and night flying, low-altitude bombing and over-water navigation. Preparation for this raid was a concert of effort and cooperation between all branches of the US military. On April 1, 1942, 16 B-25B's, 71 officers and 130 enlisted men were loaded onto the aircraft carrier, USS Hornet. Each bomber carried four 500-pound bombs with two 50 caliber machine guns in an upper turret and a 30 caliber machine gun in the nose. The combined task force consisted in two aircraft carriers, three heavy cruisers, one light cruiser, eight destroyers and two fleet oilers. On April 18, 1942 while the task force was still about 650 nautical miles from the Japanese coast a security compromise caused an early launch of the 16 B-25Bs. This was the only time that US Army Air Force bombers were launched from a US Navy aircraft carrier on a combat mission. Lt.Col.Jimmy Doolittle (pilot), Lt.Richard Cole (co-pilot), Lt.Henry Potter (navigator), SSgt.Fred Braemer (bombardier) and SSgt.Paul Leonard (flight engineer/gunner) lead the fleet of bombers arriving over Japan six hours after launch bombing ten military and industrial targets in Tokyo, two in Yokohama and one each in Yokosuka, Nagoya, Kobe and Osaka. Many targets were strafed by the bomber's nose gunners. None of the bombers were shot down. After the bombing and strafing had been completed, the B-25B fleet proceeded southwest along the southern coast of Japan and across the East China Sea toward eastern China. This was the longest combat mission ever flown by the B-25B Mitchell bomber, averaging approximately 2,250 nautical miles. Of the 16 aircraft (each with a crew of 5) all either ditched or crashed and of the 80 men, 1 was killed and 10 were captured and 3 were later executed. The mission of the Doolittle Raiders demonstrated that Japan was vulnerable to American air/sea attack. Doolittle initially believed that loss of all his aircraft would lead to his being court-martialed but on his return to the US, he received the Medal of Honor and was promoted to Brigadier General. American morale, still reeling from the attack on Pearl Harbor and Japan's subsequent territorial gains, soared when news of the raid was released. Story Two: On the night of June 1, 1966 on his 97th mission in the Viet Nam War, Air Force fighter pilot, John Borling's F4C was shot down northeast of Hanoi, North Viet Nam. He was seriously injured. He attempted to commandeer a Vietnamese supply truck for his escape but was overpowered by Viet Cong (VC) adversaries. He was brought to the notorious North Vietnamese prison infamously called the Hanoi-Hilton as a Prisoner of War (POW). It was a place of torture, deprivation and frequent periods of solitary confinement. Borling's future was unknown as he spent time just trying to survive. He kept his mind busy composing poetry in his head. He recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag and, as with religion, his faith in the ideals of the US became a powerful sustaining life-force. There were years spent with no windows, no ventilation, no sun and a mat to sleep on with an overflowing toilet bucket became his luxuries. Communicating with fellow POW's was paramount to maintaining his sanity. Adversity breeds creativity so the use of an alphabetic "Tap Code" provided a lifeline of intra-cell communication. Over 140 POW's including John Borling were released on February 12, 1973. Borling had spent over 6 1/2 years (80 months) in North Vietnamese captivity. His military career spanned 37 years and he retired as a Major General in the US Air Force having received the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars with V for Valor and two Purple Hearts.. He is married to his high school sweetheart, Myrna and has two daughters. He has authored "Taps on the Walls, Poems from the Hanoi Hilton" and amongst other military and business activities is the founder and chairman of SOS America (Service Over Self). |

It featured a "Hot Rod Car Show" for the Guys and "Luxuries and Indulgences" for the Gals. Sponsorship was lead by Cumulus Media radio stations serving Wilmington NC.

Forever | A set of covers canceled on July 21, 2014
at Wilmington NC commemorating the 45th Anniversary of America's landing on our moon. On July 20, 1969 America's LEM
(Lunar Excursion Module) landed on the surface of the moon and on July 21, 1969 the first earthly human, Neil Armstrong
walked on our Moon.
History: The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) was established by Congress on July 29, 1958 and charged with responsibility for America's space program and the peaceful applications in space science. President John F Kennedy asked Congress on May 25, 1961 to commit the US to a program to land a man on the Moon launching America's Apollo Moon-landing mission (Project Apollo). On January 27, 1967 Apollo-1 experienced a major setback when a cabin fire killed the entire crew (Gus Grissom, Edward White, and Roger Chaffee) during a pre-launch test. Cape Fear native, flight technician Stephen Clemmons was with the astronauts on that fateful day doing what he could to save them. For his efforts, he received the NASA Medal for Bravery. Failure and experimentation lead NASA to success when on July 20, 1969 Apollo-11 landed on the surface of the Moon. America's astronauts, Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin made history returning safely to their Earth on July 24, 1969. Armstrong uttered the words as he stepped onto the Moon, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Five subsequent Apollo missions also landed astronauts on the Moon, the last departed from the Moon on December 14, 1972. Throughout these six Apollo spaceflights, twelve Americans walked on the Moon. The Cape Fear Museum in Wilmington NC, is presenting "A View from Space" from February 1, 2014 through September 7, 2014. This interactive, hands-on science exhibit allows visitors to see our Earth from a satellite's perspective. Visitors can track a hurricane from space, send a satellite spinning into orbit around a model Earth and study images of Earth captured by NASA's Observing System. |
