Pan Am had acquired "Special Performance" jumbo jets, 747SP's enabling non-stop
service between the United States and Japan and vice-versa. This supported Pan Am's
round-the-world routing. On April 25, 1976 Pan Am inaugurated this Los Angeles/New
York to Tokyo flight service.
A few days later, on May 1, 1976 the Liberty Bell 747SP flew from NY
round-the-world via Delhi India and Tokyo Japan returning to New York on May 3,
1976. Pan American Airways had offered a special invitation to the public to fly on
this round-the-world specially scheduled flight. It carried 130 passengers and
traveled 23,137 miles. The flight was monitored by the National Aeronautic Association
(US representative of the Federation Aeronautique Internationale) which documents world
aviation speed and distance records. The flight of the "Liberty Bell" set a new
round-the-world flight speed record of 46 hours, 50 seconds for its circumnavigation of
the earth. View the Pan Am brochure for this flight, Page 1, Page 2, Page 3 and Page 4.
