Pan Am had acquired "Special Performance" jumbo jets, 747SP's enabling
non-stop service between the United States and Japan and vice-versa. This supported
Pan Am's round-the-world routing.

Los Angeles, CA (April 25, 1976) to Tokyo, Japan (April 26, 1976)
Tokyo, Japan (April 26, 1976) to Los Angeles (April 26, 1976)
New York, NY (April 26, 1976) to Tokyo, Japan (April 27, 1976)
Tokyo, Japan (April 28, 1976) to New York (April 28, 1976)

Just before the inauguration of the Tokyo/New York return flight, Japanese
Postal Authorities refused to permit use of a special 747SP Liberty Bell 747SP
cachet to be applied to commemorative postal covers that were to be carried on this
return flight. These covers had an additional red cachet applied to their rear. A
few days later, on May 1, 1976 the Liberty Bell 747SP would fly from NY
round-the-world via Delhi, India and Tokyo, Japan returning to New York on May 3,
1976.
