In the 1930's and 40's, Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy were a popular
screen couple starring together in movie musicals produced by
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Nelson was an opera singer before he
became a film star while Jeanette turned to opera later in her career.
Nelson was a tall, fair-haired, classically-trained baritone from the
opera and concert stage. Jeanette was a petite redhead who had danced
her way out of the chorus to become a musical comedy star on Broadway.
In the dark days of the Depression, this unlikely combination of soprano
and baritone collided almost accidentally on a movie sound stage. The
resultant sparks ignited the US as they became known as "America's Sweethearts."
The signing duo emerged and would forever be remembered as the epitome of
on-screen romance coupled with musical excellence.
They starred in a series of eight films that have stood the test of time
and continue to captivate audiences with their melodious charm.
Stamps.com was an ideal venue where individuals were able to personalize their postage with their
favorite photographs. Among many subjects, pictures of
couples
(sweethearts) quickly became a popular subject
on these personalized postage stamps. These thematic (topical) stamps became staples in family albums
encouraging and stimulating a love of sharing and collecting memories. Personalized postage stamps documented
the who, what, where and when of family members with each photograph cementing a time, place and
event so important to a family, the building block and foundation of America's society.
The creative use of Jeanette and Nelson photographs on US computer stamps helps all to remember the past and
a path into the future.
Those who remember yesterday, influence tomorrow.
