The following Chinese Batik Paintings are available for sale.
These Batik paintings are from the collection of Leland Ren. Ren spoke little
English but it was understood that these paintings came from Mainland China
and were brought to Taiwan where they were purchased in the early 1960's.
Each painting is signed, sealed and titled by its creator.
Batik is a traditional Chinese folk art which combines hand-drawn painting
and dyeing. They are made by dipping specially designed knives and brushes
into melted beeswax and parafin, and painting these waxes on a stretched
closely woven cotton cloth canvas. The wax penetrates the fabric canvas
and after it hardens in the air, colorfast dye is applied to the cloth.
The dye is only absorbed where there is no wax. This process in repeated
for different tones and colors usually proceeding from light to dark dyes.
Finally, the whole painting is covered with wax and left to harden. The
artist then artfully cracks the wax surface highlighting his subject
matter. Another application of dye seeps into the hairline cracks creating
a distinctive cracked and veined background that unifies the colors and
composition. The wax is then boiled off and the painting is left to air
dry. It is ironed flat and the resultant painting truely becomes a
contemporary interpretation and expression of ancient Chinese folk art.
Batik can be traced back to the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-24 AD). Batik
used to be popular both in Central and Southwest China. Somehow the batik
technique was lost in Central China, but it has been handed down from
generation to generation among the ethnic people in Guizhou, a province in
Southwest China. Nobody knows how Batik was invented, but a folk tale
about a "batik girl" tells us something about it. The story relates that
long, long ago, there was a girl living in a stone village called Anshun,
now a city in Guizhou Province. She was fond of dyeing white cloth blue
and purple. One day, while she was working, a bee happened to alight on
her cloth. After she took away the bee, she found there was a white dot
left on the cloth, which looked very pretty. Her finding led to the use of
beeswax in dyeing. Artisans spread this batik technique by emigrating
throughout Southeast Asia and the Mid-East. It has become a highly accomplished
art form. Like oil painting, each Batik is a unique distinctive work of art.
The below Batiks are unmounted. Their size will be slightly smaller when framed.
