RAF Support Command Round-the-World Global Flight
The Central Flying School (CFS) of the Royal Flying Corps was established
at Upavon Airfield England on May 12, 1912. This flying school provided
pilots for the Military and Naval Wings of the newly formed British Royal
Flying Corps. On April 1, 1918 the CFS was responsible for the training of all
the RAF flying instructors and was the Royal Air Force's main facility for all
flight training. Upavon served as a Flying Training School until the end of
WW-II and was considered to be the longest serving flying school in the world.
On September 1, 1972 the RAF's Air Support Command was merged with Strike
Command and the reformation of the 46 Group headquartered at RAF Upavon. To
commemorate these events and "The School" at Upavon, the RAF Support Command
made a round-the-world global flight. Captain Flight Lieutenant's MM McKinnon
and AB Law made the circumnavigation in a Hercules XV-292 with an in-flight
time of 86H 4M.
