Ernest A. Kehr (autograph) was a stamp columnist and the stamp editor for the New York Herald
Tribune. He regarded every stamp in his collection as a source of information about the country and
the peoples by which it had been issued. He distributed philatelic materials to Veterans' hospitals
as head of "Stamps for the Wounded" and, as a newspaperman, produced more lineage to support philately
than other person in history. His book, "Romance of Stamp Collecting" (1947) was also the hobby's
standard for new collectors for decades.
As vice-president of the American Air Mail Society, Kehr provided the coordination with country
members of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) asking for their cooperation at postmarking the aerograms
carried by the Atlas Sky Merchant in its 1948 round-the-world flight.
Now in 1955 to support the Herald Tribune Fresh Air Fund, he personally carried a number of covers
round-the-world. The covers were later sold as souvenirs to collectors, the proceeds going to the
Fresh Air Fund. He carried the covers as he traveled by commercial flights of several airlines
taking them to five continents and more than two dozen countries. His round-the-world trip was his
global air odyssey. He died in 1986.
