Peter Francis Mack Jr. was born on November 1, 1916 in Carlinville IL and died in
Rockville MD on July 4, 1986. He is buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1948 and served from
January 3, 1949 through January 3, 1963. He was a former Navy pilot so while a congressman,
he was motivated to fly round-the-world to try and counter anti-American propaganda that
accompanied the Korean War.

He borrowed a Beechcraft 35 Bonanza from the Smithsonian Institution. This was
the same plane flown by Captain William P "Bill" Odom on his record breaking
Hawaii/Continental US flight in 1949 (see Odom 1947 RTW flights). For his RTW goodwill flight,
he changed the plane name from "Waikiki Beech" to "Friendship Flame."

On his round-the-world goodwill flight, he visited 45 major cities in 35 countries in 3
1/2 months. On his return he said, "I carried the message of peace from the land of Abraham
Lincoln to the people of the world."

In 1975 the Bonanza was refurbished by Beech Aircraft and put on exhibit at the National
Air and Space Museum. It carries its "Waikiki Beech" markings on the left side of the fuselage
and the "Friendship Flame" markings on the right.
