Freedom begins as we become conscious of it. It takes effort to be free. It takes understanding to remain free. Our military with its soldiers stand on the front line defending our freedom. They are the line between good and evil. They are propelled into unique warring situations where patriotism and courage are coupled with equipment and weapons to defend the freedom of the United States. Our soldiers risk their lives. They are in harm's way. They don't want to die but may die in this struggle. Should they die, we honor their commitment to such a noble cause.
David Antol died on December 20, 1967. He was a young man with his life ahead of him. He had loving parents (Anna & Steve), a younger sister (Patty), lots of cousins, lots of friends and buddies. He was in the prime of his life. All of this would be taken from him as his helicopter hurled to the ground in Viet Nam. David's life was over, his dreams ended. A part of all of us died along with him. We miss him, we imagine what he would be doing today. We think about fairness, we think about what is just and what isn't. Lots of questions run through our minds. Lots of sadness paint his survivors.
What can we do for David? In his name, you can do "an unsolicited act of kindness." To the degree you can, help someone. Let kindness become contageous. David defended freedom and wanted the world to be a better place. We can carry into the future, the torch of freedom that David handed us. Freedom begins as we become conscious of it.
